Thanksgiving in the Bayview
On Saturday I had the privilege of delivering about 250 turkeys to folks less fortunate than myself. For the last 5 years of so, I have joined with other members of the San Francisco Bayview Rotary to deliver turkeys to Kiska Road (on the top of Hunters Point Hill) and to Alice Griffith (Double Rock). This was the first year, however, that our 8-year-old triplets joined me.
I’m not sure what they expected as they were introduced to the 10 adults they would be working with (“are we the only kids?” was muttered by one of them) nor I was I sure how they would react. As we entered Double Rock they began to ask questions: Why are we doing this? Can’t these people get their own turkeys? As they carried turkeys and Rotary Cards to the doors they began to notice physical attributes about the neighborhood (bars on doors and metal bullet guards on windows) as well as the demographics of the neighborhood (decidedly African American). As we walked from front door to front door I was asked about poverty (both in San Francisco and the nation), classism (that’s my word not theirs) and racism (again my word). These are all things I’ve thought about a lot but I suspect my kids had not. Discussing these issues with them made me think about them again (there is nothing like being asked a question by your kids to make you rethink things) and gave me an opportunity to talk about them with my kids in a way that, I hope, might encourage them to make decisions as they get older that will make all of our Thanksgivings better.
From all of us at Pet Camp - have a happy Thanksgiving.

Some thoughts for the Day
I just returned from the Governor’s Conference on Small Business. It was an opportunity to hear from small business experts about what we at Pet Camp need to do better. There wasn’t much input as to how we love and care for dogs and cats, but there were plenty of suggestions on how we can use “new media” to better communicate with our campers (or at least their parents). So I’m going to give it a try. I’ll be posting (I guess the term is blogging) every few days about the comings and goings at Pet Camp and ask you to let us know what you think – both about the blog and Pet Camp in general.
One of the big issues with using new media was the way it can be used to reach out to folks – which is how I’m using it now. But the more I heard them all talk about new media, blogging, twitter, social networking (all things I admit I’m going to try), the more I was thinking that none of that matters if you’re not any good at your core business or if your just writing to fill up space. I’m confident that our counselors are great at their core mission and I’ll do my best not to just put up idle words.
So for today, here’s what’s happening at Pet Camp. We spent the day with Mark Rogers (www.markrogersphotography.com) taking new pictures for our web site. I have no idea how professional photographers like Mark make it happen. He’s in the middle of playgroup snapping away, getting great shots of dogs playing, somehow juggling a camera that costs who knows how much with a bunch of bouncing dogs.
On the medical side, I was reading DVM Magazine (I really know how to have a good time) and there was a short article about a newly discovered gene mutation that it only know to affect wire-hired Dachshunds, miniature long-haired Dachshunds and Pit Bull Terriers (and it turns out humans) that causes early onset of the retinal degenerative disorder. If you have one of these breeds give us a call or shoot us an email and we’d be happy to send you a copy of the article.
We, of course, are getting ready for Thanksgiving. This year we are having a really great Thanksgiving treat for the campers -- a Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, pumpkin & veggies!! If your pet is spending the holiday with us consider this as an extra special treat
